That combination of electronics knowledge, procedural discipline, and safety awareness defines the profession.

Avionics technicians can build careers in several aviation sectors:

  • Airlines and cargo operators: Supporting scheduled fleets, line maintenance, overnight checks, and heavy-maintenance events.
  • Business and private aviation: Maintaining advanced, highly customized avionics suites in corporate aircraft and private jets.
  • MRO facilities: Performing repair, overhaul, modifications, upgrades, and avionics installations for multiple customers.
  • Manufacturers: Working in production, flight test, quality assurance, product support, or modification programs.
  • Government and defense: Supporting military aircraft, mission systems, unmanned aircraft, and government fleets.

Education and Certification Paths

There is no single route into avionics. Many technicians begin through an FAA-certificated Aviation Maintenance Technician School, military technical training, vocational electronics programs, or supervised on-the-job experience. FAA-certificated maintenance schools operate under 14 CFR Part 147.

Many employers prefer or require an FAA mechanic certificate with an Airframe rating, Powerplant rating, or both—commonly called an A&P certificate—because it expands the maintenance work a technician may perform and approve. However, the FAA states that there is no separate, additional regulatory certification required specifically to work on avionics equipment; technicians without appropriate mechanic or repairman privileges must work under qualified supervision.

A repairman certificate can be another pathway in certain employer-specific situations. FAA eligibility generally includes being at least 18, being qualified for the assigned work, being employed in a position requiring those qualifications, receiving an employer recommendation, and meeting applicable experience or formal-training requirements.

Industry credentials can also strengthen a candidate’s profile. For example, the Aircraft Electronics Association’s Certified Aircraft Electronics Technician credential has been recognized by the FAA as equivalent to formal training for a specific repairman-certificate eligibility pathway.

Pay and Career Outlook

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for avionics technicians was $82,280 in May 2025. The BLS projects overall employment of aircraft and avionics equipment mechanics and technicians to grow 6 percent from 2025 through 2035, with about 13,100 openings per year across the combined occupation.

Actual compensation depends on factors such as location, shift schedule, aircraft type, overtime, union status, security clearance, certifications, and experience. Technicians with advanced troubleshooting skills, OEM training, business-jet experience, or expertise in high-demand avionics platforms may have access to more specialized opportunities.

Career progression can include roles such as lead avionics technician, avionics inspector, avionics installation specialist, field service representative, maintenance controller, technical representative, quality-control inspector, or maintenance manager.
