SUMMARY:The Airfield Technician is responsible for the upkeep of the airport property and will perform a variety of skilled and unskilled maintenance work on airport buildings, grounds and airfield infrastructure. Technician operates and services a variety of motorized equipment and hand tools. Performs all aspects of manual labor, general airfield maintenance and construction for a general aviation airport. Responsible for conducting daily field inspection and reporting of airfield conditions for a general aviation airport.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
· Assist in the safety, security, and self-sufficiency of the airport.
· Monitor airport infrastructure such as airfield lighting, storm sewers, fences, gates and ensure safety and compliance.
· Monitor and inspect pavements such as the runways, taxiways, aprons, roadways, and parking lots and report conditions.
· Perform minor repairs, maintenance and crack seal to pavements such as the runways, taxiways, aprons, roadways, and parking lots as needed.
· Operates and services a wide variety of motorized equipment used in general airfield construction and/or maintenance.
· Perform routine scheduled and unscheduled maintenance to maintain vehicles and machinery in good working condition.
· Keep airport shops, tools, equipment, and facilities orderly and clean.
· Responsible for landscaping: mowing, trimming, weed control, and general grounds appearance.
· Operates light duty and heavy-duty trucks.
· Operates heavy motor equipment such as power sweepers, backhoe, front-end loaders, commercial mowers and tractors and others as needed.
· Operates or rides in trucks and utility vehicles in the performance of job duties and to get from one job to the next; includes off-site locations.
· Uses hand and/or motorized equipment such as chains saws, saws, brush cutters, weed trimmers and grinders.
· Performs snow plowing, sanding and deicing using large trucks and a variety of motorized and hand operated equipment.
· Responsible for the proper care and use of assigned motor equipment, including washing, and checking fuel and fluid levels, tire pressure, lights and general condition.
· Required to request repairs for equipment when needed and responsible for the outcomes of those repairs.
· Performs minor emergency repairs on vehicles, lawn equipment, and hand tools, using basic mechanical skills and working independently when needed.
· Performs manual labor as required to conduct basic airfield maintenance and repairs.
· Accomplishes basic maintenance work and assists the trades when required.
· Responsible for proper and safe use of equipment.
· Ensures adherent to security provisions and internal security policies at all times, including entrance and egress from gates.
· Communicates on two way and aircraft radios according to procedure.
· Snow and ice removal and/or emergency response responsibility, to include being responsible to be reached on off days on RIAC-issued cell phones.
· Must be available to work emergencies after the regular workday.
· Responsible for inspection and reporting of airfield conditions for a general aviation airport, this shall include opening/closing runways and taxiways and issuing NOTAMS, written or verbal notifications to tenants, or any other effective means of communications.
· Ensures wildlife management program is being followed.
· Reports tenant issues and/or concerns to appropriate RIAC management staff.
· Ensures the general safety and security of the airport (in non-law enforcement capacity)
· Provide escort service on airport property, as needed, for contractors, vendors, and third-party entities conducting business with RIAC.
· Other related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:May act as a crew leader for a specific job or project.
QUALIFICATIONS:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. · Must possess at all times a valid Rhode Island CDL Class B and a Hoisting/Engineer Certificate (Limited) which must be maintained as a condition of continued employment. Must maintain the ability to operate equipment/vehicles on the airfield as a condition of continued employment.
· Must have a basic knowledge of general maintenance methods routinely utilized at an airport.
· Must demonstrate skill in operation and general servicing of heavy trucks and motor equipment.
· Must have the ability to make emergency minor repairs to equipment.
· Must have the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to use and comprehend standard airport phraseology and operate a two- way radio.
· Able to comprehend, follow and help enforce strict rules and safety procedures.
· Ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheets and follow standard safety procedures.
· Must have basic computer skills to include: Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook capabilities.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
· High school diploma or GED required.
· Three (3) years of experience operating/servicing heavy motor equipment.
· Three (3) years of airside experience or demonstrated capabilities to perform job functions effectively if less than three years of airside experience.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Class B CDL and a Hoisting Engineer (Limited) which must be maintained as a condition of employment.

· Ability to lift at least 50 pounds from the ground to waist level several times per day. Understanding and utilizing proper safety equipment and body mechanics.

· Work at moderate heights and on a ladder required.
· Ability to traverse airport grounds.
· Ability to physically operate equipment and tools.
· Sitting at a desk required for administrative work.
· Ability to work long hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays during snow and ice removal operations and as other circumstances dictate.

· Work is primarily performed outdoors, in all seasons and weather conditions, in close proximity to aircraft, on and around runways and taxiways.
· Extremes of heat, cold, wind, dust, and dampness may be encountered as the work is usually performed outdoors year-round.
· Runways and taxiways may heighten the need for visual and aural acuity.
· The use of safety equipment such as but not limited to seatbelt restraints, hard hats, and goggles may be routinely required.
