Avionics Lead Technician

Western Plains Aviation is seeking an experienced and motivated Avionics Lead Technician to join our growing team in Northern Colorado. We are a trusted aviation maintenance and avionics facility specializing in aircraft maintenance, repair, upgrades, and avionics integration for general aviation piston aircraft.
This is a hands-on working lead position for a skilled avionics professional with strong Garmin installation and troubleshooting experience who can provide technical leadership while actively supporting day-to-day shop operations.

Position Summary
The Avionics Lead Technician oversees daily avionics workflow while performing advanced installation, troubleshooting, integration, and repair of aircraft avionics and electrical systems. This role works closely with the Avionics Manager to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with FAA and company standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform advanced troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repair of aircraft avionics and electrical systems
- Install, configure, and integrate Garmin avionics systems and related equipment
- Lead avionics upgrade and retrofit projects including communications, navigation, autopilot, audio, and flight instrument systems
- Interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and installation manuals
- Ensure compliance with FAA regulations, manufacturer specifications, and company procedures
- Train and mentor junior technicians
- Coordinate with maintenance personnel to support efficient aircraft turnaround
- Conduct inspections and quality checks to ensure airworthiness and regulatory compliance
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation
- Assist with avionics inventory, tooling, and shop organization
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Associate degree in avionics or related field preferred
- Minimum 3 years of avionics technician experience with leadership responsibility
- Strong Garmin avionics installation and troubleshooting experience required
- FAA Part 145 repair station experience required
- Strong understanding of aircraft electrical systems and avionics integration
- Familiarity with FAR Part 43 and Part 91 regulations
- Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals
- Experience using avionics diagnostic and test equipment
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Detail-oriented with strong troubleshooting ability
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced maintenance environment
- Willingness to work overtime or occasional weekends as needed
Work Environment
Work is performed primarily at our facility at Greeley-Weld County Airport (KGXY). Occasional travel may be required. Candidates should be comfortable working in hangar and outdoor environments in varying weather conditions.
Physical Requirements
- Move and position aircraft using tow equipment
- Climb on, under, and around aircraft
- Work from ladders or elevated platforms
- Perform tasks requiring precision hand and arm movement
- Lift, bend, reach, twist, and work in confined spaces
- Read and identify fine-detail wiring and components
Compensation & Benefits
- $65,000 – $85,000 annual salary (DOE)

Location Requirement
Candidates must be able to reliably commute to or relocate to Greeley, Colorado (80631) prior to employment.
