Senior Industrial Designer – Furniture Systems
Location: Los Angeles or Remote
About 7th Avenue
7th Avenue is a modern furniture brand that combines elevated, contemporary aesthetics with functional day-to-day features. Our flagship product, "The World's Greatest Modular Sofa", features endless modularity, water-repellent and stain-resistant fabrics, removable and machine-washable covers, adjustable back cushion firmness, memory foam blend cushions, soft-close hidden storage, and more. All products are sustainably-built, free from harmful chemicals via OEKO-TEX and GreenGuard Gold-certified fabrics, and devoid of flame-retardants and formaldehyde. The frames are incredibly durable and built to last 10 years or more.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Industrial Designer to lead the technical design and CAD ownership of our modular furniture systems. This role will focus on rebuilding and standardizing full 3D CAD assemblies of our existing products, developing animated assembly and manufacturing sequences, and designing a new modular sleeper system with an integrated foldable steel base.
This is a hands-on, production-focused role for a designer who is equally comfortable refining product form and building structured, manufacturing-ready CAD assemblies.
The ideal candidate has strong experience in furniture systems, understands manufacturing constraints, and can bridge design intent with engineering execution.
Key Responsibilities
CAD Ownership & Documentation (Primary Focus)
- Recreate and standardize full 3D CAD assemblies for existing modular furniture products
- Model complete assemblies including frames, brackets, connectors, upholstery interfaces, and hardware
- Develop structured BOMs and part hierarchies
- Create exploded views and detailed assembly documentation
- Produce animated CAD sequences showing:
- Assembly steps
- Manufacturing flow
- Modular configuration changes
- Ensure CAD files are organized, revision-controlled, and production-ready
Mechanical System Development
- Design and engineer foldable steel sleeper mechanisms
- Develop linkage systems, hinges, pivots, and locking mechanisms
- Perform load path and structural considerations (static and dynamic)
- Conduct tolerance stack-up analysis
- Improve durability and cycle life performance
- Integrate recliner systems (manual and powered)
Manufacturing & Overseas Production Support
- Prepare complete factory-ready documentation packages
- Communicate directly with overseas suppliers
- Review prototypes and pilot production samples
- Identify root causes of quality issues
- Ensure consistent production execution
Process & System Building
- Build internal CAD library
- Standardize components and hardware
- Develop internal engineering documentation processes
- Support long-term product scalability
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Industrial Design or related field
- 10+ years experience designing furniture or physical product systems
- Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks (or similar parametric CAD software)
- Experience building large, structured assemblies
- Experience creating exploded views and assembly animations
- Strong understanding of materials (wood, metal, upholstery)
- Experience taking products from concept to production
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing sleeper sofas or transformable furniture
- Familiarity with steel components or mechanical integrations
- Experience working with overseas factories
- Knowledge of modular product systems
- Rendering skills (KeyShot, Blender, etc.)
What Success Looks Like
- Full CAD ownership of current product line
- Clear, structured, production-ready assemblies
- High-quality animated assembly documentation
- A manufacturable, well-integrated modular sleeper system
- Reduced production ambiguity and improved factory communication
