Incumbents in this position maintain and repair airport runways, ramps, taxiways and grounds as well as respond to Snow Call and other weather related or emergency events.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Operates heavy and light machinery: MultiTask snow vehicle, trucks, tractors, snow plows, snow blowers, rollers, snow jet broom, de-icer trucks, graders, forklift, skid loader, crawler, backhoe, utility loader, large and small power painting equipment, dump trucks, tractors, trucks, street sweepers, grass cutting tractors, weed sprayers, water trucks, cement mixers, chain saws, welding equipment, asphalt recycler and rollers, and other equipment.
- Responds to snow call/weather/emergency events.
- Inspects airfield conditions and remove foreign object debris from the airfield.
- Cuts grass, performs weed control, hauls dirt, cuts and removes trees, and assists with landscape maintenance.
- Installs, inspects, and maintains security fencing.
- Removes debris from the airfield; removes rubber from runways.
- Operates de-icing equipment.
- May provide escort for contractors operating airside.
- Other duties as assigned to support airfield operations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Data Utilization: Requires the ability to compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data and information according to a prescribed scheme or plan.
- Human Interaction: Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from others.
- Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to operate and perform complex rapid adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as loaders, motor graders, trucks, tractors, sweepers, backhoe, mowers, carpentry tools, mechanic’s hand tools, welder, de-icing equipment, salt spreader, pavement saw, snow blower, sand blaster, painting equipment, forklift and/or related materials used in performing essential functions.
- Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information such as safety regulations, blueprints, inspection reports, materials delivery sheets, vehicle maintenance manuals and general operating manuals.
- Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentages, and decimals.
- Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
- Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties that may be subject to frequent change.
- Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents.
- Physical Requirements: Tasks involve the ability to exert regular and sustained moderate to heavy physical effort with an emphasis on which involves climbing and balancing stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy objects and materials weighing one hundred (100) pounds; and may occasionally involve objects and materials over one hundred (100) pounds.
- Sensory Requirements: Requires the ability to recognize and identify individual characteristics of shapes to clearly distinguish objects and sounds to detect equipment malfunctions and communicate with others.
Other Requirements
- Must be available to work varying shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
- A ten year background investigation will be conducted in accordance with FAA regulations for positions at St. Louis Lambert International Airport.
Qualifications
One year of experience in maintenance and/or grounds work.
License: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of filing application and be able to present it upon request. Please note type of license, number, class and expiration date on the Employment Application. Only qualified applicants who provide proof of a valid driver’s license will be considered for this position.

Veterans Preference Points

City Residence Preference Points
City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points.City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
