WindBorne Systems is supercharging weather forecasts with a unique proprietary data source: a global constellation of next-generation smart weather balloons targeting the most critical atmospheric data. We design, manufacture, and operate our own balloons, using the data they collect to generate otherwise unattainable weather intelligence.
Our mission is to eliminate weather uncertainty, and in the process help humanity adapt to climate change, be that predicting hurricanes or speeding the adoption of renewables. We are building a future in which the planet is instrumented by thousands of our microballoons, eliminating gaps in our understanding of the planet and giving people and businesses the information they need to make critical decisions. The founding team of Stanford engineers was named Forbes 2019 30 under 30 and is backed by top-tier investors, including Khosla Ventures and Footwork VC.
Overview
We’re looking for a hands-on, highly adaptable Senior Assembly Technician to join our fast-moving manufacturing and R&D team. This is not your typical assembly line job — you’ll be one of the first to build and test new iterations of our balloon payloads, working closely with engineers to bring designs from prototype to production.
Ideal candidates have experience in R&D labs, NPI (New Product Introduction), or rapid prototyping — and love working with their hands. If you've ever brought a custom build to life from a sketch, tinkered with cosplay or prop fabrication, or been the go-to person for figuring out builds without full instructions, we want to hear from you.
Responsibilities
- Build intricate electro-mechanical assemblies for our weather balloon payloads
- Work from evolving instructions — often verbal or from early-stage documentation
- Collaborate with engineers to iterate on new designs and improve build processes
- Solder components onto delicate PCBs and perform electrical tests
- Adapt to frequent process changes as our product evolves
- Operate and troubleshoot 3D printers to support prototyping and low-volume production
Skills and Qualifications
- Comfortable in ambiguity and fast-paced environments
- Excellent hand dexterity and attention to detail
- Quick to pick up new skills and excited to build what hasn’t been built before
- Familiar with hand tools, 3D printers, small parts, adhesives, and delicate materials
- Able to communicate clearly and work cross-functionally with engineers and peers
- Excited to be part of a mission-driven team solving real-world problems
- Soldering and electronics assembly experience
Nice to Have
- Prior experience in R&D, NPI, or rapid prototyping environments
- Experience with cosplay, prop building, or creative fabrication projects
- Familiarity with Linux
- Experience working at a startup or on a small team
