Senior Cost Accountant – Aerospace Manufacturing
Position Summary
The Senior Cost Accountant is responsible for analyzing, controlling, and reporting costs associated with complex aerospace manufacturing operations. This role supports compliance with regulatory standards, improves cost efficiency, and provides financial insights to engineering, production, and leadership teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Cost Accounting & Analysis
- Analyze direct materials, labor, and overhead costs for aerospace components and assemblies
- Maintain and update standard costs; perform cost roll-ups for new and existing products
- Support job order costing and project-based accounting typical in aerospace manufacturing
- Inventory & Manufacturing Accounting
- Oversee inventory valuation (raw materials, WIP, finished goods)
- Monitor cycle counts and physical inventory audits
- Ensure accurate cost tracking across long production cycles
- Variance & Performance Analysis
- Analyze production variances (material usage, labor efficiency, overhead absorption)
- Partner with operations to explain variances and implement corrective actions
- Compliance & Regulatory Support
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and government contracting rules
- Support audits related to Defense Contract Audit Agency requirements (if applicable)
- Assist with cost proposals and pricing for government contracts
- Budgeting & Forecasting
- Develop manufacturing budgets and forecasts
- Track capital expenditures and production costs against plan
- ERP & Systems
- Work within ERP systems such as SAP ERP or EPICOR
- Improve cost accounting processes and system accuracy
- Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with engineering, supply chain, and production teams
- Support new product introduction (NPI) costing and profitability analysis
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 5–8+ years of cost accounting experience, preferably in aerospace or manufacturing
- Strong knowledge of standard costing and inventory accounting
- Experience with government contracts or regulated industries is highly preferred
- Proficiency in Excel and ERP systems
